Pregnancy Osteopathy & support with Avni Trivedi

Pregnancy is a miraculous stage of life, but there can be too much focus on what could go wrong, and not enough care to make a woman feel at her most nurtured.

I’ve always been fascinated with pregnancy - the immense ability of a woman to create and nurture new life. However, as my clients share in our sessions, they often feel scared and stressed at this time.

What I’ve noticed is that pregnancy changes every single area of a woman’s life. Her body, emotions, work, relationships, creativity and finances. Paying attention only to the medical aspects can miss out on the richness of the experience.

I’ve been treating hundreds of pregnant women for over 14 years and have a passion for helping each pregnancy to be treated as special. Each woman, no matter how healthy she is or what’s going on in her life, deserves to feel supported and respected, and to have her needs met.

Osteopathy helps restore the body's self-healing mechanism. It does this by addressing fluid circulation, nervous system function, and musculoskeletal alignment. Treatment involves a combination of soft tissue work, joint mobilisation and spinal adjustments. Gentle ‘cranial’ techniques are also used, working with the body's inherent motion patterns.

In the UK, osteopathy is a protected title, and all osteopaths have undertaken a minimum of 4-5 years of training. Osteopaths are required to continue professional development to maintain their professional registration.

In early pregnancy, a woman might be experiencing symptoms such as headaches or nausea. At this stage, symptoms are mainly due to hormonal changes. Hands-on treatment is effective, gentle and reassuring. It can be a worrying time, especially as midwifery or medical appointments may not have yet started, or if there has been a history of miscarriages or fertility treatment. Sessions at this time can also be helpful for making changes to exercise, nutrition, and stress management that will support a healthier and happier experience.

In mid-pregnancy, symptoms can arise that are more mechanical in nature, related to how the body adapts to the growing baby.

In later pregnancy, treatment works to align the pelvis and spine to facilitate an optimal position for the baby.

I'VE WORKED WITH WOMEN EXPERIENCING CONDITIONS INCLUDING:

  • gestational diabetes

  • twin pregnancy

  • antenatal depression

  • previous history of loss, including miscarriage, TFMR and stillbirth

  • pelvic girdle pain/ symphysis pubis dysfunction

  • pregnancy following IVF or other assisted conception

  • VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean)

  • breech presentation.
